Safety in the Office
Offices are generally safe places to work; however, they can pose certain dangers. Officer workers can suffer injuries from falling, over-exertion, burns and electrical shocks, to name a few.
Computer work can also be the cause of certain injuries. Working at a computer too long can cause low back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as carpal tunnel syndrome and stress.
The following are helpful tips for computer usage:
- Be sure the work station is comfortable. Place feet flat on the floor. Items that are used frequently should be within easy reach.
- The monitor should be placed where it can be seen without tipping the head back. Make sure there is no glare from windows or lighting fixtures.
- When using the keyboard, keep wrists straight with hands and arms relaxed.
- Take mini-breaks from the computer by performing other tasks such as using the phone or filing.
- Be sure to do stretching exercises for hands, arms, neck and back.
Some other reminders for office safety:
- Offices should be kept free from litter to eliminate falls and fires. Materials should not block exits, halls or stairwells. Be sure to discard or recycle items that are no longer needed.
- Fires can occur in offices. Fire extinguishers and alarms must be conspicuously placed and accessible. Also, learn how to use a fire extinguisher to fight a small fire.
- Electrical accidents occur as a result of faulty or defective equipment, improper installation or misuse of equipment. Equipment must be properly grounded and have a sufficient number of outlets to prevent overloading of circuits. Cords should not be dragged over nails, hooks or sharp objects. Receptacles should be insulated so that no electrical parts are exposed.
- Paper cutters are also dangerous. Keep the blade closed when not in used. A guard should be provided and fingers should be kept clear during operation.
- When removing staples, always use a staple remover. Never test a jammed stapler with your thumb.
- Do not climb onto chairs to reach for overhead objects. Instead, use stepstools and stepladders.
- Use a handcart for moving heavy objects such as boxes of paper or furniture.
- Be aware of surroundings while in parking lots, hallways, and elevators.
- Use only one file drawer at a time. To prevent filing cabinets from tipping, be sure to load them from the bottom up.
By following these safety tips, offices can be a safe and secure place to work. |
